BIOGRAPHy

Always in quest of artistic creation, violinist Stéphane TRAN NGOC has performed as a soloist with orchestra, in recitals, or as a chamber musician - in a string quartet or, today, as the concertmaster of the Danish Chamber Players - in over thirty countries and in some of the world's best concert halls such as Salle Pleyel, Carnegie Hall, Tokyo's Suntori Hall, Bejing's National Concert Hall and with orchestras such as the Philharmonic of Radio-France, Orchestre National d'Île de France, Orquesta Nacional de Mexico, Sinshei Symphony Orchestra.

His interest in instruments have led him to become an adept of the Baritone violin, an instrument tuned an octave lower than the violin, as well as to play on historical instruments, including the Viola d'Amore. Among his recordings are the premiere of Serge Nigg's sonata for violin and piano (Grand Prix du Disque), as well as the sonatas of Ysaye, Bach, and Schumann sonatas, and a recording dedicated to Ravel, all of which have received critical acclaim.

His training went through the CNSM in Paris (1st prize in violin at the age of 15) before continuing in the United States with Itzhak Perlman and Dorothy Delay at the Juilliard School in New York. He was awarded top prizes in international competition such as the Long-Thibaud (Grand Prix and Audience Prize), Paganini, Lipizer and Artists Internationals.

Passionate about teaching, he has taught at the CNSM of Lyon, at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music before being appointed to the London College of Music as director of the strings department, and he now teaches at the Pôle Sup'93. He has been a member of the jury of international competitions including the Long-Thibaud competition and many of his former students are today among the elite of their generation.

Of Vietnamese descent and rich of an international multi-culture, he performs regularly in Vietnam where he is artist in residence at the HBSO in Ho Chi Minh City. He also initiated a masterclass program "A Violin to Vietnam" which allows him to give masterclasses in that country.

He is the artistic director of the 2 Churches Festival, a music festival taking place near his grand-parents former home in the Normand Bocage. The festival takes its full flight in 2022 with concerts including some top performers such as Mark Drobinsky, Ami Flammer, Fabrice Pierre and Yann Dubost.

Stéphane Tran Ngoc plays on a 1709 Francesco Gobetti violin, treasure of the Venetian violin-making and on instruments by André Sakellarides (violin, baroque violin, baritone violin, viola d'amore).
